Ankle Replacement Candidate
"I am 61 years old, 6ft 3in and 265lbs. I was heavily involved in sports up including college football, rugby and basketball. Ankle injuries were common. I have been a general contractor for the last 40 years jumping off heavy equipment. Starting about ten years ago, pain had developed in both ankles with significant swelling. After a tractor accident broke my left ankle and leg, I found out that my ankles are bone on bone. I could hardly walk by the end of the day with excruciating pain. I couldn’t go bowling with my family or even walk on the beach.
I have tried cortisone injections and Synvisc with no improvement. Each orthopedic clinic that I saw said that my only options were (1) to have a bilateral ankle fusion or (2) a bilateral Star ankle replacement. I was not happy with either option.

Torn Achilles Tendon
A little over a year ago, I slipped on a mop handle and tore my right Achilles tendon. I have spent this past year attempting to get my tendon to heal. I had seen a variety of doctors and gone through a series of different treatments in hopes of a cure. These treatments included wearing a walking boot to immobilize the tendon causing me to develop hip and knee pain which I had never had before, physical therapy, ultrasonic wave therapy, steroids and time off from work to rest the tendon. None of these therapies worked. I work in a busy cardiovascular surgical unit and I am constantly on my feet for long hours. In the past year working with this injury has been extremely difficult. The last option available to me was surgery which I had been attempting to avoid, due to usually poor outcomes.
